Do the right thing: NH House has a choice

The New Hampshire Union Leader, the largest newspaper in the state, editorialized in favor of the State House passing Right to Work today:

"We do not expect any New Hampshire House Democrats to break ranks and vote against the interests of the state’s public sector labor unions today.

The New Hampshire Democratic Party long ago abandoned any independence from Big Labor, and now functions as the political wing of the unions representing state and local government employees.

But what are a handful of House Republicans thinking? A small group of GOP representatives, many of them union members, could block the Right-to-Work bill from getting to Gov. Chris Sununu’s desk.

Some Republicans may fear the wrath of the labor unions, and hope that by feeding the crocodile, it will eat them last.

Others may believe that state government has a role in protecting unions from their members, forcing workers to pay dues to private organizations that they do not wish to join.

Neither argument justifies unions taking a piece of a worker’s paycheck involuntarily.

No one should be forced to join, or pay for, a union. Unions are not forced to represent workers who do not want to join. They choose to do so in order to maintain their unjust monopoly.

With that monopoly, government unions drive up the cost of local government, leaving local taxpayers with the tab. Before House Republicans vote on Right-to-Work today, they should think of the taxpayers they’re going to face next month at Town Meeting.
