In his weekly State House Dome column for the New Hampshire Union Leader, Kevin Landrigan reports:

Right to Work had a good week

Many labor unions had cause to celebrate with Craig’s victory last Tuesday, but further down the ballot they took some hits in the annual campaign to try and bring Right to Work anti-union legislation to New Hampshire.

Three incumbent House Republicans opposed to Right to Work lost, Kevin Pratt and Tim Cahill of Raymond and Jason Janvrin of Seabrook. Nine-term Rep. David Bickford of New Durham, a supporter of Right to Work, also lost his primary.

We’ll see what happens this November, but the effort to pass Right to Work, which allows workers to avoid contributing to union costs if they are not members, would need to bounce some other House Democrats to get in a position to push the issue through the chamber in 2025 or 2026.

It's worth noting that although David Bickford did vote in favor of the most-recent Right to Work bill, 2024's HB 1377, he repeatedly opposed Right to Work legislation during his time in office. His unreliability on the issue was raised by his primary opponent's campaign, and apparently resonated with local voters. 

Bickford voted to maintain the forced-unionism status quo by killing Right to Work bills including:

• 2015's HB 402

• 2015's HB 658

• 2013's HB 323

• 2010's HB 1645

• 2006's HB 1496
